The Challenge

The Challenge: What am I giving up for Lent this year?

This year I will try to use as little plastic as possible, and use no new plastic.

Lent starts Wednesday, February 17th and ends Sunday, April 4.

I will try to replace things I use everyday with non-plastic alternatives.

Why?  Plastic is made from fossil fuels, and as we as a global community run out of oil we have to find ways to live without it.  Lots of people talk about alternative transportation and energy sources, but we still use plastic in nearly everything.

I saw an individually wrapped potato at the grocery store and that put me over the top.  We have to stop using so much plastic.  Throughout my Lenten journey, I will also post information about the toxicity of plastic, and the immense amount of plastic waste created.

My philosophy in general is that what we need is a combination of structural change and individual change.  I don't think we should all freak out about our toothbrushes while there are coal plants doing MUCH more environmental damage. However, we do hold power as individuals, and especially if we coordinate our efforts we truly can make a difference.  So don't feel badly about your personal shortcomings in being completely sustainable, but feel empowered to make a difference.

I work all day at structural change- www.mainefairtrade.org- trying to change the rules of the global economy to be more just and sustainable. This personal project is one of my individual commitments to living out the vision I see for a better world.

I hope you will enjoy following my Plastic Free Lent 2010!
